When assessing a new student, educators often use the term “social-emotional readiness”. This term covers the following areas of growth and development: emotional self-regulation, attachment relationships with trusted adults, self-confidence, and the ability to connect with and get along with others. When a child can demonstrate that they are beginning to develop these skill sets, that is a good indicator that they are ready to explore a school environment.

Here are some ways parents can help make sure their child is emotionally prepared for school:

• Provide opportunities for your child to interact with other children without your direct management (think playing at the park)
• Leave your child with a trusted adult for varying periods of time to help them develop resiliency and to accept care from others
• Help your child develop self confidence by including them in simple household responsibilities
