Ahwatukee’s 1st Montessori marks 25 years

In January 1995, a new concept in children’s education came to the Ahwatukee Foothills – the Montessori Method developed by physician Maria Montessori in Italy in 1906.

The first Montessori school in the U.S. opened in 1911. Though there were others in the Valley when Jan Vickery emigrated to Ahwatukee from Michigan, where she’d had overseen Montessori schools, Ahwatukee – her new home, had none.

It was a perfect fit for the burgeoning community attracting young families to the foothills.

 

AFM collects toys for Salvation Army

The children of Ahwatukee Foothills Montessori School have been bringing in their change for their love light banks in each classroom. The children raised more than $600 and Mrs. Meaghan McClung matched it. The school used this money to buy new toys for children whose families need help for the holidays.

Ahwatukee Foothills Montessori will be hosting its 18th annual Holiday Sing-A-Long at the school for neighboring businesses and the community to enjoy holiday caroling.

The event has been an ongoing tradition at Ahwatukee Foothills Montessori, dating back to the first year the school opened.

Local entities collecting for those in need

Ahwatukee Foothills Montessori’s 110 students raised about $600 this school year by saving spare change in their “lovelight” piggy banks, and were able to buy about 70 toys to donate to Salvation Army’s Chandler location.
